Ted Levett

Edward Arthur Levett (1916 – 1999)

 

Ted Levett was born in Edmonton on 6th December 1916, and started with the Company in May 1947 as a machine operator.  During WWII he had been in the R.A.F. where he had been an air gunner on Wellington and Liberator bombers in North Africa and Italy with No. 205 Group.  He survived very difficult raids including a number on the important oil installations at Ploesti in Romania.

 

Ted was a skilled tool-maker, and moved with the Company to Haverhill in 1968 with his wife, Ena, who herself worked as a scale assembler for us between 1968 and 1972.  Ted was responsible for training many young apprentices, although the change to electronics resulted in eventual closure of the toolroom.

 

Ted left the Company at the end of 1980 after 33 years service.  He loved sport and had played football and cricket whilst in the Services.  After his retirement he played a lot of golf until ill health prevented this.  However, he was still able to have the odd flutter on the horses, where typically he tended to back outsiders rather than the favourites.  He was spotted in the bookies the day before being taken to Addenbrookes for a leg operation, but unfortunately had a fatal heart attack in the hospital, and died in August 1999.
