George Plater was born in Holborn on 24th July 1905, and joined us in March 1925,where he was for many years driver to Messrs. Fitz and Arthur Herbert.

During 1939-45, to help the war effort, he transferred to the machine shop which was then engaged in turning out wartime products, including aircraft parts.  Later on he joined the tool room, and then took over as Inspector.

George died on 27th September 1966 aged 61 while on a Mediterranean cruise, and was buried at sea.  The Lion News reported that he ‘was a quiet and unassuming man, who seldom showed his feelings, but his shy exterior covered a depth of character of which few were aware’.
