Olympic Games at Earls Court, London

Eight Platform Weighing Machines lined up at Earls Court, London for the 1948 Olympic Games, supplied by Herbert & Sons for use in the weightlifting.

 

The second photograph shows the British Light heavyweight contender, Ernie Roe, who finished 9th in the rankings.  Ernie Roe, a coal miner, became interested in weightlifting as a youngster and used to practise by lifting large stones in a local quarry.  Six times British champion, he was placed 6th in the 1946 World Championships, 2nd in the 1949 European Championships and 3rd in the 1950 European Championships.  He retired from competition at the age of 43 due to injuries received in a mining accident.

 

The last photograph shows John Davis of USA, Heavyweight World Champion, who broke 3 Olympic Records and set a new World Record of 391lbs (177.5Kg) on 11th August 1948, with a set of Herbert & Sons scales.
