Money Box - 'Lion'

Before the development of Hire Purchase, the company, in common with many firms of our type, introduced a scheme for collecting regular contributions from customers.

Lion scales and mincers were supplied to butchers, etc. on payment of a lump sum and agreed weekly payments to be deposited in the Lion money box.  The cash was then collected by our representative - who was the only one who had the key - on his regular visit and the amounts credited to the customer's account.

This method of collection appears to have ceased by the time of the issue of the 'Herbert & Sons' Money Box.

The box has a slot for coins on the right hand side, and a hole for notes on the other.

Taylor Law & Co Ltd of Birmingham made similar boxes for other scale companies, such as this one for Mattocks Automatic Scales Ltd of Walworth Road.
