Money Box - 'Herbert & Sons'

Before the development of Hire Purchase, the company, in common with many firms of our type, introduced a scheme for collecting regular contributions from customers.

Lion scales and mincers were supplied to butchers, etc. on payment of a lump sum and agreed weekly payments to be deposited in the Herbert money box.  The cash was then collected by our representative - who was the only one who had the key - on his regular visit and the amounts credited to the customer's account.

However this box has an engraved label stating ‘Send us your payments direct.  We do not collect but pay to any of our depots’, which indicates that the practice of the cash being collected by our representative had ceased since the days of the earlier ‘Lion’ Money Box.

The box has a slot for coins in the top, and a hole for notes in the side.

The base is marked “Automatic Recording Safe Co Ltd, London, Made in England”.
