Wally Phillips

Walter Phillips

Wally Phillips first joined the Company in 1912, rejoining after war service in 1919.  He retired on 11th September 1959 from his position as Heavy Scales Outside Mechanic after 40 years of continuous service.

He is pictured here at the Lion Society 25 year dinner at the Rutland Hotel Smithfield on 30th September 1950.

Wally is also seen here on the left with Fred Pennell (centre) and Eric Sorrell (right), enjoying a break during the servicing of a weighbridge at Tyrers Chemical Works in Stratford in 1948.

On his retirement the Lion News reported that Wally, ‘a keen gardener, has a wonderful sense of humour and has always taken life cheerfully, as those who have heard him tell the story of the escaped lunatic on his roof will testify’.

Wally died on 6th March 1975.
