Alf Kirk

Albert George Kirk

Alf Kirk was born in Holborn on 9th April 1918 as Albert George Kirk.  We do not know why or when he changed his first name, but he was always known as Alf.

Alf joined the Company as an electrical service engineer in January 1957.

Working around the London area he was responsible for servicing the many Lion electric mincers and coffee mills which were operating in many of the big stores, butchers and grocers shops that then existed in the Metropolitan area.

In 1968 he developed a serious eye condition which prevented him from driving, so he decided to move to Haverhill where he worked in the stores.

However his condition deteriorated further, forcing him to give up work.  He took early retirement in 1975, and took on a guide dog called Honey, who was often to be seen escorting Alf round the town, even carrying her own tin of food home.

Alf died in December 1990 at home in Haverhill.
