Derek Greaves

Derek Ian Greaves (1935 - 1987)

Derek Greaves was born in December 1935 and was apprenticed as a scalemaker to the Company in 1957.

Always known as 'Lofty', he was one of our first service engineers to move into electronic technology, and was a tower of strength in the London service organisation.

He was often called in for trouble shooting and difficult jobs.  In October 1985 he was specifically thanked for his work on installing a Retail system for a trial at an Argyll Store in Loughton.  This required a lot of ‘aerial’ work in the roof space, and at one point Derek’s foot went through the ceiling, but was saved from a serious accident by a convenient joist.

Derek collapsed and died on 2nd December 1987 while at work in the Tesco store in Witham.
