Joe D'Amant Jnr

Joseph William P D'Amant (1927 - 1992)

Joe D'Amant was born in Islington on 31st March 1927, his father Joe Snr having joined the Company in 1925.

Joe himself started with the company as a Service Engineer in 1941 but shortly afterwards joined the Irish Guards with whom he served until his demobilisation at the end of WWII.  He married Lilian Quinton in Islington in 1948.

On rejoining the Company, he became one of our first mobile service engineers and, at one time, was covering a large area in East Anglia, often chalking up well in excess of 2,000 miles per week.  Shortly after the Company’s arrival in Haverhill, he moved with his family to Bury St. Edmunds continuing with his service work until taking early retirement due to ill health in 1985.

A cheerful, direct and hardworking character, he was always willing to take on any job anywhere at any time.  He had following his father into the company and between them they worked for some 89 years at Herberts.

Joe died in West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St. Edmunds, in September 1992 following a heart attack.
