Fred Bennett

William Frederick Bennett (1907 - 1982)

 

Fred Bennett was born on 20th January 1907, and took an apprenticeship with Mattocks of Walworth Road, as did Charlie Sweetman and Charlie Reeve.

 

Fred left Mattocks to become an outside service mechanic with the C.W.S. Scale Company, and in 1948 moved to the Swift Scale Company, whom we acquired in 1960.

 

Our move to Haverhill coincided with a deterioration in Fred's health, so in January 1969 he transferred to our scale assembly section where his wife also worked, and they both retired on the same day in January 1972.

 

In 1979 he decided to move to Newport in Gwent to be near his daughter, and died peacefully in his sleep in September 1982 at the age of 75.
