Bill Roberts

William Norman Roberts (1907 – 1990)

Bill Roberts was born in Chorlton, Lancashire on 1st March 1907 and served his apprenticeship with Avery's.  He joined the Company in July 1934, receiving his initial training on our products at the Berry Place Works off Goswell Road.

Bill was our first Service Engineer at the Manchester Branch, but left us at the end of WW2 to join the Swift Scale Company.  When we bought that company in 1960, Bill found himself again working for us, becoming our Service Engineer in the Liverpool area.

Bill retired on 14th June 1974, when the Lion News recorded that he was ‘A cheery and enthusiastic character, he will be missed at the Northern Branch.  Some years ago as Branch Foreman, he had his own unusual methods of maintaining discipline.'  At an informal gathering at the Eccles Depot, Mr. A.J. Herbert thanked him for his service with the Company and presented him with a cheque.  Mr. Fox, on behalf of his friends in Herberts then gave him a Parker pen and a bouquet of flowers for Mrs. Roberts.'

Bill died in Liverpool on 30th November 1990.
