Richard Jowett (1949 – 2017)
Jim
Jowett joined HM Forces in the Royal Engineers in 1972 and while a Lance
Corporal married Fiona, a WRAC Corporal, in Exeter in September 1975.
Jim
completed 25 years in HM Forces, rising through the ranks to become Regimental
Sergeant Major, then receiving his commission as Captain. He served in the Postal and Courier
Operations, providing postal and post office support to service personnel and
their dependants in worldwide locations.During his Forces career, Jim served in Germany, Cyprus and Gibraltar,
as well as being seconded for three years to the Sultan of Brunei, after which
he was awarded a UK Commendation. His
last position was as Manager Post Offices UK, Germany and Cyprus.
Jim joined
Herberts in June 1997 as Major Customer Manager in the Retail Service
operation. In 2000 he was promoted to
Area Manager for our Service operation in the South, working from his home near
Taunton. Jim ran an efficient team of
engineers, always professional but also always encouraging and supportive.
Jim was an active FA Class 1 Football Referee,
donning his black kit to referee on Sunday mornings for the Taunton Sunday
League, and he was also a referee assessor for the Somerset Football
Association, helping to develop new and young referees into the game.
For the last 15 years he had served as chairman of
Taunton Sunday league and the Perry Street League, always fully committed to
both.
Jim was taken ill at the start of June 2017, and
died on 9th June in Taunton Hospital.
