Coin Scale c1863

Scale with steel beam with swan neck terminals in a plain mahogany box 8 in x 3¾ in.

These were made by Thomas Herbert while at 319 Gray’s Inn Road, London and 47 St George Street.

The label states ‘opposite the Kings Cross Station of the Metropolitan Railway’ and the Metropolitan line, the first underground railway in the world, opened on 10th January 1863.

Thomas took his son George into the partnership on 31st December 1863, so these scales can probably be dated exactly to 1863.

The box contains the following weights:

240 grains, ob 10 (bullion, Biggs 2655)
6,5,4 & 2 grain plate weights
2 dram, 1 dram, ½ dram

This scale was generously donated to the Company by Diana Crawforth-Hitchins in 2010.
