Ada Stagg

Ada Holland (nee Stagg)

Ada Emily Stagg was born in Hackney in 1896 and joined Herbert & Sons as a secretary in 1914.

She married Alben Holland in Edmonton in 1927 but was always known as Miss Stagg.

In 1952, A.F. Herbert (Fitz) said "Many years ago there was a typewriter which was winning all the competition – it was the Salter typewriter.  I suggested that Miss Stagg should learn Shorthand and I gave her a Salter typewriter.  She started very slowly and then speeded up.  About that time we had our first telephone and I felt on top of the world because I had a typewriter and a telephone.

At her farewell 'do' in 1958 on her retirement after 44 years' service, she clearly remembered when the firm bought its first typewriter during WW1.
