Arm Testing Machine

An Arm Testing Machine or Dynamometer was developed in the later part of the 19th century, consisting of a Salter spring balance with two handles.

The British Association for the Advancement of Science described the device in their report of the 1884 annual meeting.

The Museum of the History of Science in Oxford has one of these dynamometers in its collection, stamped ‘Herbert & Son, 6&7 West Smithfield'.

Although it is stamped ‘Son' in the singular, the second son William joined the partnership around 1868, when the premises at 6&7 West Smithfield were acquired with the Wood's scale business, so the machine is probably dated to that year.
