Counter Scale Wood, c 1860

Counter scale, iron with brass scoop, for general use, mostly in shops for weighing fruit and vegetables.

The weigh plate had ‘Wood Smithfield’ cast into it.

Thomas Herbert signed an agreement to purchase the 100+ year old business of the Wood's trading at 6&7 West Smithfield in December 1867.  His timing was excellent, as the new Smithfield Meat Market opened in November 1868.
