Counter Weighing Machine 14lb - Hubbard & WalkerCounter weighing machines were of a common form, and were the ‘bread & butter' scale for everyday use in food markets and smaller shops. Similar machines appear in all catalogues of the period, such as this one from 1890.
This 14lb Counter weighing machine with an 8" x 9" square china plate was sold by Hubbard & Walker, a firm of London scalemakers who started at 85 Drury Lane in 1820, and moved to 41 Theobalds Road around 1900.
The business was purchased by Herbert & Sons for £700 in 1919.
This machine bears the Hubbard & Walker name and Theobalds Road address, but has a Herbert & Sons china plate which dates to around 1910.
