Knives

Herbert & Sons bone handled carving knife with silver ferrule, c1900.

This was one of the knives from our ‘butchers sundries' range supplied from the shop at 6&7 West Smithfield.  Originally these knives were manufactured in the basement and were stamped ‘London Made', but by the early 1900s these were mainly coming from Sheffield.

A page from a catalogue of 1910 is shown on the right.

The Standard Cyclopedia of Modern Agriculture and Rural Economy, edited by Prof. Patrick Wright and published in 1910, contained this piece on Hide Knives, and illustrated two such knives, the Opening-up Knife & the American Pattern Siding Knife.
