Weights, brass

This set of 6 brass weights on the right, from 7lb to 4oz, are stamped Herbert & Sons Ltd, 6 & 7 West Smithfield, on the handle of the larger weights.

On the bottom of each weight is stamped ‘Moore’, and this is possibly the butchers business of E G Moore in Church Street, Kintbury, Berkshire.  They were bought in that area, and our ‘Light on the Lion’ book from the 1930s shows Moore's as customers of that period.  The latest Inspectors Mark is 'EIIR 690' for the county of Royal Berkshire (now Bracknell Forest), and the date stamps range between 1928 and 1955.

Also on the right is a photograph of E G Moore's shop in 1952, from Flickr courtesy of ‘Noctorum’.  The building is still a butchers, now Mildenhall & Bullock Ltd.

A full list of "Uniform Verification Numbers 1879 – 1988” can be found in Carl Ricketts' excellent book, "Marks and Marking of Weights and Measures of the British Isles”, in Appendix III on page 66.  Current Inspectors official stamp numbers for weights etc can be found on the Regulatory Delivery (was NWML) website under "List of authorised stamp numbers for use by LWMA and approved verifiers”.

It is available as an Excel 97 - 2003 Workbook here
