Meat Trades Journal

The first ever edition of the Meat Trades Journal published on 5th May 1888 carried an advertisement for the Company, our main premises being right opposite the new Smithfield Meat Market opened in 1868.

The 125th Anniversary Supplement, published in April 2013, said ‘The first-ever edition of MTJ was around A4 sized, measuring 8 inches by 12.5 inches.  The 16-page paper featured a front cover which carried no news, just six small adverts with that style of cover remaining in place for more than 40 years.'

This issue also carried a piece on the Company, entitled ‘Herbert & Sons, Still trading after 250 years', noting that ‘Of the six advertisers on the front page of the very first MTJ, it is the only surviving business'.
